Navy might be one colour, but it wears a hundred ways, from bright, true navy to deep, inky midnight. Texture is where it gets interesting: a soft knit and airy linen at the easy end, satin and silk with that liquid, glossy drape, delicate lace, and full-on sequin at the loud end. The cuts are just as varied: a tank or cami, a structured corset, a halter or off-the-shoulder that bares a little, a covered-up long-sleeve, polo or henley. And the prints are where it gets fun: a navy-and-white stripe for that French-girl polish, or a navy polka dot for retro charm.

Navy’s genius is how easily it goes with things, which is exactly what everyone’s Googling. The no-brainers: white (crisp and nautical), denim (navy and blue denim is unexpectedly cool), black (surprisingly sharp), and every neutral going, cream, camel, grey, tan. Want it to pop? Navy loves a hit of red (very Riviera), or gold and mustard for warmth. For bottoms, a navy top works with white jeans, black tailored pants, a denim mini skirt, or a satin midi for evening.
