Starry Night runs a close second with deep blue drapes and hanging stars, which a navy or sequin dress plays into perfectly.

For something softer, A Night in Paris leans pink and pretty, so a chic black mini or a blush slip does the trick, while Secret Garden wants pastel florals among the arches and greenery. Winter Wonderland turns everything silver and snowy, which is where a white or icy-blue dress with silver jewelry shines. If you want real drama, a Masquerade Ball brings candlelight and masks, best matched with a jewel tone like deep purple.

Throwback themes win because half the outfit is already in someone's closet. A Great Gatsby or Roaring '20s night wants beading and fringe, and our Old Money edit gets you most of the way there. Read it as a starting point, not a rulebook. Homecoming is semi-formal, so one nod to the theme through color or fabric does the job, and you can dress it up or down from there.

Spirit week is the dress-up runway before the game, and a few classics turn up everywhere: pajama day, decades day, color wars, jersey day, and spirit day. Pajama day is easy once you swap the wrinkled tee for a matching lounge set. Color wars and spirit day both come down to wearing your class or school colors head to toe, ideally loud enough to win the group photo, while jersey day just needs a team top with denim shorts and sneakers.

The creative days are where people actually compete. Twin day is a commitment with a friend, blackout or whiteout puts the whole grade in one shade (a black dress is the easiest blackout), and Barbie vs Ken is still going strong post-movie, all hot pink and denim. Beyond those, character day, neon day, Anything But a Backpack Day and a dressed-up Formal Day (yes, a party dress on a random Tuesday) keep the week from feeling repetitive.
