Black Evening Dresses

Q: Is black ok for a black-tie event?

It can be, but colour alone doesn’t make a dress black tie. The invitation and the dress itself do the deciding, so look for a floor-length style with a formal finish, like a satin or structured maxi, then accessorise to match.

Q: What length is best for a black evening dress?

It depends on the invitation. Maxis suit black tie and formal galas, midis work for dressy dinners, theatre and semi-formal events, and minis are best kept for cocktail parties. There’s no need to dress more formally than you’ve been asked to.

Q: How do I choose the right size in a black evening dress?

Measure your bust, waist and hips, then compare them with our Size Guide . Size options vary from style to style, so check each product page for available sizes and any fit notes before you add it to your bag.
