Wedding Guest Dresses

Q: Can you wear black to a wedding?

Usually, yes, black is elegant and widely accepted now. Still, weigh a couple of things: some couples or cultures read it as too somber, and very formal or religious ceremonies can be more conservative. Check the invitation, keep the styling celebratory rather than funereal, and if you’re unsure, just ask the couple.

Q: Should a wedding guest choose a maxi or cocktail dress?

Let the formality decide, not a rule. A cocktail dress suits most semi-formal and daytime weddings, while a maxi leans dressier for formal and black-tie, especially in a luxe fabric with a polished finish. Venue matters too: a maxi feels right in a grand ballroom, a cocktail length at a relaxed garden wedding. Follow where the invitation points.

Q: What should I wear to an outdoor wedding?

Dress for the ground and the weather as much as the dress code. Grass, sand and cobblestones all punish a stiletto, so a block heel or wedge is your friend. Choose breathable fabrics that won’t wilt in the sun, pack a wrap for when it cools, and still match the formality on the invite, outdoor doesn’t automatically mean casual.
