If you were any sort of human growing up in the 2000’s, your life was undoubtedly touched by the dramatic lives of Orange County’s troubled teens and the outcast that was Ryan Atwood.
Whether for the drama, the lols or the sheer heartbreak and outrage; here are the moments from the OC that we’ll have in our hearts forever.
Ryan and Marissa’s first meeting…
The cigarette. The driveway. The glances across the street. The absolute beginning of the story of two star-crossed lovers and the exchange that changed our lives. Californiaaaaaaa, heeeeere we coooo-ooome!
Welcome to the OC bitch…
The words that Luke, welcomes Ryan to the friendly world of the Orange County alongside a solid right hook in the pilot. It didn’t only make you instantly hate Luke’s character but also fall in love with Ryan and it just generally set the tone of the whole show. The writers were NOT fucking around (and we lived for it).
When it was revealed Julie Cooper was making a bee-line for her daughter’s boyfriend, douchebag Luke. This was so early on in the series it should’ve been an obvious tell-tale that no holds were to be barred throughout the series. It was shocking and sickening but Julie then went on to date half the men in the O.C and we got used to it.
When Kirsten was first spotted pretending her vodka was water…
The idea of a wholesome O.C family was BROKEN for hopefuls worldwide. Isn’t anything sacred?
Atwood leaving the O.C (for the first time)…
Ryan leaves the OC to go be with a pregnant Teresa, hallelujah plays (this fucking song), Kirsten is seen clearing Ryan’s bed & breaking down about her fled adopted son, Marissa gazes pensively then necks some vodka from the bottle..it’s all too much. Kirsten then really loses it at the end of this scene and frankly so do I. It’s still season one people!
The Spiderman kiss between Seth and Summer! Swoooon. Rivalled only by Ryan chasing Marissa down on new year’s to make THE midnight kiss. The new years kiss lost a point for predictability.
Marissa shooting Trey…
Holy shit. SHOOK. Absolutely SHOOK! Ryan’s estranged brother comes to town to fuck up his life only for them to get into a fist fight in which sees Marissa bursts into the hotel room (they were fighting in..obvs) and shoots him to save Ryan and we are SHOOK.
Marissa OD’ing in Mexico…
Ryan carrying Marissa’s limp body down an alleyway in Tijuana was so romantic and so helpless at the same time. My heart was full and also broken simultaneously. Can we remember this was in a family time slot?
Caleb has a heart attack and falls in the pool…
This was just so dramatic (and lols’y like, come ON) I didn’t see it coming. It did get rid of another one of Julie’s husbands to spice up her life again though.
And finally, the moment that changed it all…
When the car smash between Ryan and Volchok ends in the crash that ends Marissa’s life…The build, the crash, the flames, THAT SONG ( Hallelujah) and Ryan carrying Marissa’s limp body down the road and out of the remnants. I still feel it in my bones.
Everything after this was all a bit downhill and people kinda hated on season 3 because there was no Marissa but I was really into seeing how the tortured soul that is Ryan dealt with the whole thing. He goes through that cage fighting period and we are continuously gripped only to be met with nothing except Summer’s weird greenie phase which I don’t think anyone still quite understands the point of.
Alas, the O.C served us some of our best TV moments with some of our best soundtracks to bleed our teen hearts away too and we’d watch a re-run any day of the week!
