TV & Film
06 December 2017
It’s 5pm somewhere, and that means there’s probably (most definitely) a Friends rerun happening somewhere.
Friends; the ultimate TV show that we can watch any episode, any time and still be taken right back to that place. In honour of what is possibly the greatest show of all time, we’ve gathered a list of 14 times Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Chandler, Joey and Ross broke our hearts then put them back together again.
Warning: Tears and spoilers ahead.
This was early on before we knew what real love was but it tugged at our heartstrings as they slow danced their love away.
Ross gets Rachel a really heartfelt present, Chandler reveals it’s because he’s in love with her and we all really fall for the ‘nice guys finish last’ narrative. It’s subtle. It’s awkward. It’s the start of the beginning.
You can almost feel the humiliation of poor Ross as his friends watch a film of his teenage self, skulking around in the background as Monica and Rachel get ready for prom without him.
And both he and Chandler mope about. Playing foosball, watching TV alone and gazing out the window Bridget Jones’ style. Has there ever been a stronger on-screen bromance?
“Bloody hell Ross. You really f*cked it this time” – All of us through a pool of our own tears. No more Mr Nice guy!
This plotline sucked but Joey deserved a little love and it was the glimpse we needed that he was an emotional human and not, well…just a complete goon.
She meets him at her grandmother’s funeral. Then, goes on to have a real meeting with him and he sings to her and you hug your pillow in tighter because you are ruined and HASN’T THIS GIRL BEEN THROUGH ENOUGH?
When Monica realises it’s Chandler that she wants and tries to propose to him but she can’t through tears so he then sets up a really romantic attempt and struggles because he’s…Chandler. It’s too much and we all want THAT romance.
With Chandler walking her down the aisle, Joey officiating and the gals by her side, it’s the family she never had and as she speaks we are all happy we are all one big family.
Rachel’s heart to heart with Chandler kicks off the sombre mood of the farewells as Chandler is NEVER serious. You really know shit’s about to get real when he confesses his (friend) love for her.
Then it’s followed by her goodbye to Ross and we’re all bloody crying
“It’s too damn hard Ross, It’s too hard”. Then they kiss and probably bone and she leaves and we are all left with unrequited love sized hole in our hearts and it HURTS.
Then Chandler gives a speech to their surrogate birth mother-to-be about how much of a great mum Monica would be and we all think she’d be a bit of an intense psycho parent, but we nod along and cry real tears anyway. Here, here Bing!
When Rachel burst through the door after having gotten off the plane to com eback and be with Ross.
They all hand in their keys and we are all left broken and wondering what the future will bring.
Then we realise, we too need to go back to our real lives and we don’t know how we can go on, but we do…
