Taylor Swift’s EPIC New Video Just Dropped

17 June 2019

Released on her Youtube channel only 45 minutes ago, Taylor Swift’s new video for song ‘You Need To Calm Down’, an anti-hate anthem in celebration of pride month, has already garnered more than half a million views.

Love her or hate her, you can’t deny that Taylor Swift’s ‘reputation’ (ehhhhh see what I did there) for tea-spilling, dramatic, star-studded music videos is pretty damn epic – and her latest offering is no exception.

On the opposite end of the spectrum from her last moody melange of a music video, ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ (which had major emo vibes); ‘You Need To Calm Down’ is basically 2019’s version of the Powerpuff Girls; complete with pastel colours, candy and all things happy.

Featuring an all-ensemble cast of some of the most famous LGBTQ icons…

  • Comedian Ellen DeGeneres (NBD, just got Ellen)
  • “Orange Is the New Black” actress Laverne Cox
  • The cast of Queer Eye (Karamo Brown, Antoni Porowski, Jonathan van Ness, Bobby Berk and Tan France)
  • R&B singer Ciara
  • TV personality RuPaul (yes, fucking RUPAUL HIMSELF)
  • Modern Family actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson (LOVE HIM)
  • Broadway actor Billy Porter
  • Singer Adam Lambert
  • Figure skater Adam Rippon
  • Actor Ryan Reynolds (cos’ he’s just the best)
  • Singer Hayley Kiyoko
  • Singer and dancer Todrick Hall (also featured in ‘Look What You Made Me Do’)
  • Dancer Chester Lockhart
  • Model Dexter Mayfield
  • YouTuber Hannah Hart

…The video finishes with the long-standing enemy of Taylor Swift, Katy Perry – in a scene where they hug, ending their feud and promoting love not hate. This is followed by a CTA and note by Taylor; “Let’s show our pride by demanding that, on a national level, our laws truly rad all of our citizens equally. Please sign my petition for Senate support of the Equality Act on Change.org”.

What do you think about the video? I think that anything that promotes this type of message is fab, regardless of capitalising on issues (which is what some news outlets/tweeters are saying).
