Here’s Exactly How To Save More Money This Month

Money, money, money! We always want more, yet as soon as we get it, we make it rain (drinks, clothes, coffees, brunch etc). Even if you don’t have a particular event to save for, like a holiday, it’s great practice to be mindfully pinching pennies. If you slash the small purchases, you’ll be surprised with how much change is leftover over for the bigger things. The key to saving cash is equal parts discipline and awareness. You need to shut down the voice inside your head that always chimes in with ‘treat yo’self’ and ‘YOLO’. And then you need to be aware of where your money is actually being wasted. Summer is a spending spree, so with winter approaching, it’s the perfect time to become a little bit of a tight ass. Let’s cut to the chase and talk about the small ways you can save money this month.

Be honest…

Most banking apps have a feature that will summarise where you spend your money. If you’re not privy to online banking, then make a note of every single purchase. The act of journaling will make you second guess every time you PayPass something.

Unsubscribe temporarily…

Take yourself off the subscribers list from all the promotional emails you receive daily from stores, gyms and restaurants etc. The theory behind this is simple: out of sight, out of mind!

Cut the booze…

If you can’t fathom giving up drinking for a month (if you can, kudos to you) then drink before you go out.

Go halves…

Pub and restaurant meals are oversized as is, be savvy and suggest to your girlfriend that you share one main size meal. One steak and chippies at the pub is the perfect portion size for two.

Or eat before you go to dinner…

If you know group dinner out will be expensive, then have a few snacks before you go and just order a side. If anyone judges you, just say you’ve had an upset stomach.

Split the cost…

Netflix is already pretty cheap, but it could be cheaper. So find a friend/housemate/sibling who has an account and propose that you share it. While you’re at it, make a list of all your memberships and see what else can be shared.

Hoard your gold…

Empty your gold coins into a money box every time you get home. Everyone hates splitting a note, so with no spare change, you’ll be less likely to buy that sneaky 3pm snack and second coffee.

Switch up how you get your caffeine fix…

A barista almond flat white/soy cappuccino/chai latte can cost up to $5 (when you do the math on what you spend on coffee in a year, you’ll have a meltdown… It’s ballpark $1500).

Try an alternative like instant coffee or switch to green tea for the same wake-up effect and plenty more antioxidants.

Vow to only buy on sale…

Try to only buy things that have been heavily discounted. If you’re really disciplined, try not to buy anything unnecessary for one month.

Swap cocktails for couch time…

Organise the next group hang at your house instead of a bar. Sell the idea to your friends with a fun activity to do like taco night, baking or the standard movie marathon in your pj’s with bulk chocolate.
