Important Life Lessons From 8 Classic Fashion Icons

Audrey Hepburn

“I believe in pink. I believe happy girls are the prettiest girls. I believe that tomorrow is another day, and…I believe in miracles”.

In other words, embrace what makes you girly and feminine. Smile and laugh because happiness is the definition of true and authentic beauty. If you have a bad day and things don’t seem to be going your way, there is always tomorrow. You are given a whole other day to turn things around and to think and act more positively. Lastly, everything happens for a reason and some things just can’t be explained, so open your heart to the possibilities of life.

“For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone”.

For a happy and fulfilled life, it’s not about what you yourself receive but what you can give to others. Life feels worthier when you realise that everyone is capable of feeling the same emotions as you and that the words you speak and the way you act towards others has an impact on not only your own life but the lives of others.

“You can tell more about a person by what they say about others than what others say about them.”

Similar to the quote before, a more accurate judgement of a person’s character is not what other people say about them, but what that person says and how that person treats other people. If you can find something nice to say about the people around you, even a person that has wronged you in the past, a weight will be lifted off your shoulders and you will feel more love and happiness for life.

“I have learnt how to live… how to be in the world and of the world, and not just to stand aside and watch.”

Do you ever feel like life is just passing you by? It’s easy to get caught up in the daily grind and accept the inescapability of a routine. Audrey tells us that that is not the case at all. You can choose to go through life in a melancholic state or see the beauty and happiness in moments of life that are challenging. To live in the world, not to just be in the world, requires you to be fully present. So, when you are completing tasks and running errands, actually think about what it is you’re doing and be present while doing it.

Coco Chanel

“A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.”

In your life, you must carry yourself with class and exude confidence. Even if you don’t believe it yourself, embody what you think it is to be confident and the very act of faking it till you make will transform you into a stylish woman. Believe that you are worth it and deserving of life’s pleasures. Be spontaneous, challenge people and have fun.

“In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different.”

Don’t ever try to fit in. Trends come and go but your personality, your beliefs and what makes you uniquely you are special and no one can take that away from you. Of course, your physical being and your mindset will grow and develop and your opinion will change as you get more life experience and overcome life’s obstacles but just remember there is no one on the planet that is exactly like you, and that in itself is amazing. So, love yourself and embrace your differences.

“All men are children, and if you understand that, a woman understands everything.”

Men are immature, ok, some men are immature and they behave on a different wavelength to us women. Men and women are not the same and once we realise this we can co-exist better together.  Haven’t you ever heard of the saying ‘men at 23 are like boys at 15’? Save yourself the stress and hassle and realise that some men may not think as realistically and logically as you, especially when you start dating someone.

Sophia Loren

“Nothing makes a woman more beautiful than the belief that she is beautiful”.

Self-love makes the world go around! You can only give true love to someone else once you truly love yourself. If you believe that you are beautiful and worthy then other people will see it too. When you feel insecure about yourself, this comes across in the way you behave and people can see it.

“Mistakes are part of the dues one pays for a full life”.

Sometimes in life, you have to take risks, you have to make that jump and take that leap. You may fall flat on your face but you may also soar higher than you’ve ever been before. The rewards won’t come if you stay in your comfort zone. You shouldn’t be afraid of mistakes either, in every mistake, there is a lesson, you just have to find it.

“Spaghetti can be eaten most successfully if you inhale it like a vacuum cleaner”.

There is an abundance of food in this world that tastes so amazing, it just has to be eaten on the regular. Diets are unhealthy and can damage your self-esteem, putting so much pressure on the way you look and this can consequently affect your mental health. You should be able to enjoy life’s pleasures without the guilt. Life is all about balance. Have a whole pizza if you want and then go for a long walk the next day. Have that chocolate brownie and start the day off right with a green juice and a dip in the ocean.

Elizabeth Taylor

“The problem with people with no vices is that generally, you can be pretty sure they’re going to have some pretty annoying virtues”

Nobody is perfect. Perfection is an unachievable goal. Everyone has things that they can improve about themselves. In life, we are constantly learning new things about ourselves and the people around us. Someone that claims that they have no insecurities or someone that never owns up to their mistakes is in denial. Self-doubt creeps up on the best of us, so people who can recognise that these negative feelings are passing feelings and those people that choose not to dwell on them are living their best life.

“You find out who your real friends are when you’re involved in a scandal”

True friends are those that are supportive and give you love when you are at your worst. Those that gossip about you and add fuel to the fire are not your true friends. You don’t need heaps of friends to be happy, just a few good ones.

Marilyn Monroe

“Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it’s better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.”

Let’s be honest, we’re all a little crazy. We all act irrationally at times and make really dumb decisions, even when we know better, but our embarrassing and awkward moments are what makes life interesting and they make for really good stories. So, next time you remember one of your facepalm moments, just laugh it off. Somewhere in the world, someone has done something equally as silly as you. We’re all imperfect humans.

“Give a girl the right pair of shoes and she’ll conquer the world.”

Don’t you feel like you can take over the world when you’re rocking a killer outfit? Don’t you feel super organised and put together when you’re wearing matching underwear? In other words, you are what you wear. Wearing the right outfit can transform your mood. The next time you find that you woke up on the wrong side of the bed, actually take the time to pamper yourself and make an effort with the clothes you put on your back. Before you leave the house, look yourself up and down in the mirror and say, ‘I’m fabulous!’ You’ll feel so much better.

“I am good, but not an angel. I do sin, but I am not the devil. I am just a small girl in a big world trying to find someone to love”.

In life, we all accomplish things we are proud of and we also do things in life that we regret, but all the decisions we make shape us into the human beings we are today. Ultimately, we are also searching for connections with other people and to make memories with the people we love the most. So, surround yourself with people that make you laugh and inspire you. Never be afraid to show affection and know that you too are deserving of love in return.

Brigitte Bardot

“They may call me a sinner, but I am at peace with myself.”

Another honest quote about not letting mistakes or ‘bad’ behaviour define who you are and how you go about the rest of your life. Don’t dwell on negative moments in your life, accept that they happened, feel all the emotions that come along with it, but allow yourself to move on and make peace with the situation.

“It is better to be unfaithful than to be faithful without wanting to be.”

Never lie to yourself about how you feel towards someone. One of Bardot’s more controversial statements, but it makes sense.  Unfaithful actions will always have harmful consequences, but staying in a relationship with someone you don’t want to be with or even being friends with someone out of convenience for fear of confrontation is just as bad. It’s not fair to the other person and it’s not fair to yourself. Listen to your gut and be honest with yourself.

Jackie Kennedy

“There are two kinds of women, those who want power in the world and those who want power in bed.”

Don’t just settle for taking control of your career, take control in the bedroom as well. Be confident and powerful in your relationships and don’t be afraid to experiment with your sex drive. Show your lover just how much you appreciate them and communicate what you like and don’t like in bed. Feel sexually empowered, because feeling confident in your own skin is one of the sexiest and beautiful qualities you can possess.

“I am a woman above everything else.”

Be proud of who you are, whatever gender you identify with. For us girls, don’t apologise for being female, don’t talk down about yourself and hide your talents from the light. You can do anything you set your mind to and gender shouldn’t stop you from achieving your goals. Challenge gender stereotypes. Are you fascinated with code? Take a coding class. Do you want to become a chemical engineer? Study it at university. Do you want to fly planes? Be a pilot. As a woman, this is a great time to be alive. We have the chance to try all these different activities and move into professions, women were prohibited from experiences only decades earlier.

“One must not let oneself be overwhelmed by sadness.”

Feelings of sadness, loneliness and self-doubt can swallow you whole if you let them. When these feelings come up, let them come up, feel them fully and deeply but don’t let them tear you down. Pick yourself up and always remember that this too shall pass.

Grace Kelly

“I love walking in the woods, on the trails, along the beaches. I love being part of nature. I love walking alone. It is therapy. One needs to be alone, to recharge one’s batteries.”

Self-care is what makes us thrive and get through the week to the best of our abilities. It is so important to switch off and spend time with ourselves and recharge. Let Sunday’s be your ultimate self-care day, pamper yourself and show yourself some love. Check out our article on How to Master Self-Care Sunday’s and get ready to feel like you’re on a holiday in your own home.

“My father had a very simple view on life: you don’t get anything for nothing. Everything has to be earned, through work, persistence and honesty.”

You won’t achieve your goals if you don’t actually action them. Hands up if you have a list of things you want to do but the end of the year comes along and you’ve ticked next to nothing off this list? Things such as mediate more, go for a run, learn Spanish, and journal in the morning no longer feel motivating when you realise you haven’t even tried to make any of them happen. So, when you think of something you want to achieve, short term and long term, don’t stop there. Underneath every goal write down 3 things you will do to achieve them and actually do them.
