I’m just going to go ahead and say it now because I know what you’re all thinking. No, this charcoal is not, I repeat…IS NOT the same as the one you use for your barbeque or what Santa puts in your stocking. Don’t ever consume or use barbeque charcoal for anything to do with your body/health. Capish?
Ok, now that that’s out of the way, allow me to explain the good stuff!
What is activated charcoal?
Activated charcoal is a highly porous substance that attracts toxins and chemicals inside it. In other words, this type of charcoal has teeny tiny openings in its surface (pores) that adsorbs (binds to the surface) all the bad toxins, trapping them inside so that the body can’t absorb them. The charcoal becomes ‘activated’ through the process of being heated at extreme temperatures.
Note: This type of charcoal is made from natural sources including coconut shells and bamboo. Be sure when purchasing any activated charcoal products that the charcoal is from a natural element.
So how does it work?
The surface of activated charcoal has a negative charge to it, which attracts the positive charged toxins and chemicals within our bodies (gosh I sound like a total science nerd). Through the process of adsorption, these toxins and chemicals bond with the highly porous charcoal helping remove them from our bodies.
There are many benefits in the beauty department when it comes to activated charcoal; the most popular being teeth whitening and skin masks/scrubs.
Activated charcoal teeth whitening seems to be the new craze these days with more and more brands now offering the product. The charcoal adsorbs the stains on your teeth making them appear whiter and brighter. It also detoxifies your mouth removing any built up bacteria, leaving your gums nice and healthy. But wait, there’s more; it also protects your enamel, reduces plaque, aids in preventing cavities and freshens your breath. Ummmm AMAZING!
Eboniivory and Carbon Coco are both Australian owned brands that use activated coconut charcoal to whiten your teeth!
Activated charcoal skin masks/scrubs are used to draw out the impurities within your skin, helping detoxify and cleanse from the inside out. Not only is under the surface free of the bad stuff, it also leaves your skin looking fresh, glowing, and healthy AF.
Blaq (also an Aussie brand) and The Body Shop have you all sorted when it comes to charcoal masks and they both use bamboo charcoal (remember it’s important to purchase a product that uses a natural charcoal).
You may already know about the beauty benefits of activated charcoal, but this magical powder has amazing health benefits as well!
- Alleviating gas and bloating
- Hangover prevention
- Emergency poison treatment
- Mold cleansing
- Reducing high cholesterol
- Water filtration
So whether you’re looking to whiten your teeth, cleanse your face, prevent a hangover, or alleviate your gas issues – activated charcoal’s got you back!
