REVIEW: Lime Crime Unicorn Hair Dye

16 July 2018

Who hasn’t wanted pink hair at least at one point in their life amirite!? I wish I was one of those gals who could try something new with my hair on the reg, but after MANY failed attempts at going brunette, red, light brown, blue-black, mahogany, auburn etc in my younger years, I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m best left as a blonde. But I’ve seen these unicorn hair dyes floating around the office since I started working at Showpo, and always wondered what the deal was. Turns out they’re actually just a tint (so wash out), so thought I’d give it a go… ðŸ˜ˆ

WHAT IT SAYS

A hyper-performance hair colour from Lime Crime, that leaves hair feeling silky-smooth and smelling like a meadow! Lime Crime Unicorn Hair is a 100% cruelty-free and vegan hair dye; which deposits clean, vibrant colour that lasts longer, fades gradually and gracefully.

HOW TO USE IT

Apply to pre-bleached, clean, unconditioned hair. Massage colour into each strand. For longer-lasting, more intense results, leave the dye in for 1-2 hours. For more pastel results, wash out after 30 minutes. Don’t worry, Unicorn Hair will not damage your hair, as it does not contain any harsh chemicals or bleach! Rinse until water runs clear, then shampoo and condition as usual. To extend the life of your colour; use shampoo for colour-treated hair in between colourings.

WHAT I THOUGHT

I haven’t coloured my hair at home, for YONKS, so I’d forgotten how easy it was! I have thicker hair, so used 2 jars (as recommended) but actually used 2 different colours (I used Shook and Sushi) as I wanted more peachy-pink than just pink.

I used gloves to apply, as it was pigmented AF and I really didn’t want to rock pink paws the next day.  You basically just section your hair and apply from the roots, bringing it down through the strands, making sure it’s evenly covering every dang hair. After I was done, I used the leftovers to give my head an all-over massage, JIC I’d missed a section at the back. I then pottered about for 45 mins before washing it out!

TBH it looked DREADFUL while wet, but I messaged my GF who assured me it would look better when blowdried and in natural light (nothing like a flattering yellow light on your head).

And as you can tell from the main image, she was right! I look cute (albeit a bit tryhard ‘GUYS I AM NOT ACTUALLY 30 THIS YEAR’) with pink hair and it’s super fun.

I’m going to Europe next week so have been using a clarifying shampoo to fade the colour ASAP, but if you shampoo every few days with a colour-protectant, I think it would last really well as it’s so damn pigmented!

PRODUCT PROS

  • It smells yummy.
  • It’s pigmented AF and actually colours your hair (the colour guide is super accurate).
  • The colours are super pretty, you can go bold and bright or a more soft pastel.

PRODUCT CONS

  • It’s a bit drying.

WOULD I USE IT AGAIN

Yes, BUT, I would do a few things differently…

  • I would get someone to help me. Despite my vigorous back of head massage, there are still a few areas that are patchy.
  • I wouldn’t do it with regrowth. It looks even worse when pink (trash-tastic) – freshly bleached hair would look the best.
