What Is Sorority Rush? Showpo’s Guide to Rush Week
What Is Sorority Rush? Let's Break It Down
So, what is sorority rush? Short version: it's the multi-round process where college students go through recruitment to join a sorority, sealed with an invite called a bid. Long version: it's a week of outfits, small talk, and a little strategy that RushTok turned into a national spectator sport. If the trend just hijacked your For You page and left you a bit lost, consider this your cheat sheet.
What Sorority Rush Actually Is
Sorority rush is how you join a sorority, a women's social organization within Greek life at loads of US colleges. Picture speed-dating, but make it a whole friend group over a full week: potential new members visit different chapters across several rounds, everyone quietly ranks their favorites, and the matches get revealed in one big emotional moment on Bid Day. So when someone says they're rushing a sorority, that whirlwind is exactly what they mean.
Rush and recruitment? Same thing, used interchangeably, so don't let the two words trip you up. Rush is the older, casual name, while recruitment is the official one most Panhellenic councils use now, so if you Googled the sorority recruitment meaning and ended up on rush, you're right where you need to be. At heart it's a two-way match: you're clocking which chapters feel like your people while they figure out who to invite back, which is why it plays out over several rounds instead of one lonely application form.
Why RushTok Took Over Your Feed
If you're hearing about rush everywhere lately, you can thank RushTok. Since 2021, students at the University of Alabama and beyond have documented every step of recruitment on TikTok, from daily OOTD videos to the tears and confetti of Bid Day, and the hashtags have piled up tens of millions of posts. It basically turned recruitment into reality TV, right down to the HBO documentary and comment sections treating Bid Day like a season finale. Even if you'd never rush in a million years, this is why the whole thing suddenly lives rent-free in everyone's feed.
The Rush Lingo, Translated
Term • What it means
Rush / Recruitment • The process of joining a sorority; the two terms mean the same thing
PNM • Potential New Member, the name for a student going through rush
Bid • The official invitation to join a chapter, handed out on Bid Day
COB • Continuous Open Bidding, extra rounds some chapters run after formal recruitment
Translation: you're the PNM, the invite you're praying for is the bid, and Bid Day is the main-character moment when you find out where you matched. Memorize these four and suddenly every RushTok video makes sense.
How the Rounds Actually Go
Recruitment is split into four to five rounds that get more selective as the week goes on, starting with quick meet-and-greets and building to an emotional final round the night before Bid Day. Think of it like levels in a game: each round trims the list on both sides until you and a chapter land on each other. The outfits climb right alongside the stakes, moving from easy mini dresses in the early rounds to a dressier party dress as Bid Day nears, and our sorority rush outfits guide breaks down the full round-by-round, including exactly what to wear to each.
Fall vs Spring: When It All Happens
Most schools run formal recruitment in either the fall or the spring. The big Southern powerhouses like the University of Alabama do it in August, right before classes, which is the exact source of all that Bama Rush content clogging your algorithm in the best way, while plenty of other campuses recruit in January instead. For the real dates and how early to start prepping, our guide on when sorority rush happens has you covered.

No Bid? Here's What Happens Next
If you don't receive a bid during formal recruitment, it isn't the end of the road, promise. Loads of chapters run continuous open bidding, or COB, later in the term to fill their last spots, so there are still ways in once the main-week chaos settles. Plenty of girls join through COB or come back and try again next year, so a quiet Bid Day is a plot twist, not the finale.
Not Every School Even Has Rush
Not all colleges have sorority rush, because not every school has Greek life to begin with. It's biggest at large public universities, especially across the South, while some smaller or artsier schools skip sororities entirely or keep things super low-key. Do a quick check on your own campus before you set your heart on a certain kind of Greek life recruitment, since it genuinely varies school to school.
Now, About Those Outfits
Now that you actually know what rush is, here comes the fun part: the outfits. Every round has its own dress code, from a casual first day to satin on Preference Night, and our sorority rush dresses edit covers all of them in sizes 0 to 16. Learn the lingo, then go own every round.
